Children’s rights activists are being continuously interrogated, tortured, and kept in prison just because they dare to stand up for basic human rights for children.

There are a significant numbers of children as young as four years old who are working long hours to be able to survive in Iran or live in unimaginable poverty.

These children are deprived of their basic human rights including safety, shelter, regular meals, medical attention, education and more. They do not dare to dream about their future because their dreams are shattered by poverty, caused by the government in Iran. These children are in danger of becoming ill, attacked, abused and killed. They even have a name: ‘Children of Work and the Street’.

The Islamic regime in Iran has turned a blind eye on the misery of these children and there are no laws, official organisations, or funding to support them.

To support these children there are many volunteers who are working with NGOs or working individually, to help these children.   However, these organizations and their activists are often threatened by the authorities in Iran. Why? The government in Iran sees these activists as a danger to its existence, because they expose what is happening to these children. The regime also feels threatened because these NGOs and individual activities empower the children and they expose the lack of support from the government. Behnam Ebrahimzadeh, a jailed labour and children’s right activist, was continually interrogated in prison for his activity with the ‘Association of Children of Work and Street’ and for his interviews with these children for the association’s magazine. Saeed Shirzad, another jailed children’s rights activist, faced pressure from the interrogator in prison when they found his ID card which revealed that he is a support worker of the above association. Many activists are helping these children in an individual capacity but they are still being threatened by the government.

Despite the pressure from the government in Iran, threat of imprisonment, torture and long prison sentences, the children’s rights activists still courageously continue to support these children, to teach them how to read, write and draw; to help them to keep their dreams alive; to give them voice and hope.

On the 20th of November, Universal Children’s Day, meet some of these courageous children rights activists in Iran.

Campaign in support of children rights activists in Iran

In Iran, children rights activists do not get award, they get prison sentence!

Millions of children as young as four years old are working long hours to be able to survive in Iran. They grow up without being able to enjoy their childhood. They are deprived of their rights as a child and their dreams are shattered by poverty.  The Islamic regime has turned a blind eye on the misery of poor children.

There are no supports for deprived children by the government in Iran and ordinary people find ways to support these children as much as they can.  There are many individuals who use their own time and resources and put their lives at risk to defend these children. They teach them how to read, write and draw; help them to keep their dreams alive; give them voice and hope. These individuals and the NGOs they work for have become the only support and hope for deprived children in Iran.

Could you imagine what is it like for these children when their hope and support are taken away from them?

Atena Dayemi, sentenced to 14 years in prison

Saeed Shirza, sentenced to 5 years in prison

Omid Alishenas: sentenced to 10 years in prison

Behnam Ebrahimzadeh, already spent 5 years in prison and given further 9 years & 4 months sentence

And many more…

The children rights activists are being continuously interrogated, tortured and kept in prison just because they dare to stand up for children rights.

The street children in Iran need your support. The jailed children rights activists need you support.  On 20 November, the Universal Children Day, join us and lend your voice to support deprived children in Iran.
