Urgent: political prisoners are deprived of medical attention in Iran
April 7th is the World Health Day. On this day I would like to draw your attention to the new developments in regards to the situation of political prisoners in Iran. Prisoners who are are denied the much needed and urgent medical attention by the Islamic regime authorities.
The Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPP) first started publishing the situation of political prisoners in Iran and the lack of medical attention via a brief report presented to the European Union – European External Action Service (EEAS) in 2012. Following this initiative, CFPPI published reports and sent information regarding the need for medical attention in various occasions to other relevant international organizations. In December 2013, the CFPPI organised a campaign called “Don’t Let Their Heartbeats Stop” to raise awareness for the lack of medical attention in prisons in Iran. Further, reports were sent to Ahmd Shaheed (the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran), and Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary General), who for the first time specifically mentioned the issue of the of the scarcity of medical attention for political prisoners, in his report to the 69th General Assembly in September 2014.
While the reports sent to various agencies and organizations have been effective in raising awareness, they have not been enough to stop the Islamic regime of its harsh treatment of political prisoners. Bigger and more effective steps are now necessary, especially by the international community, to pressure the government in Iran to provide immediate and unconditional medical attention for all prisoners.
CFPPI is continuing to receive reports from various prisons in Iran that indicate:
- Prisoners are deprived of medical attention and they are pressured to do a televised confessions in exchange for medical treatment.
- Prisoners are kept in the most unhygienic conditions where they are in contact with various diseases
- The family members of the prisoners are forced to pay for the prisoner’s medical attention, and occasionally this medical attention is not provided to the prisoner despite the payment made by the family.
- On the rare occasion that a prisoner is taken to a hospital, the prisoner is humiliated by being chained to the hospital bed.
- The deliberate inaccessibility of medical attention to prisoners by the authorities in Iran is a direct attempt to exterminate political prisoners without executing them. For example, Mr Shahrokh Zamani, a well known labour activist, was announced by the authorities to have died of “natural causes”.
Since 2012 the CFPPI has publicised the systematic and deliberate lack of medical attention provided to political prisoners and the situation is now even worse. The question which remains is why the intrnational community has not acted against this inhumane practice?
We urge you to:
Use your power to pressure the government of Iran to provide all prisoners with immediate and unconditional medical attention.
The abuse of human rights conducted by the Islamic regime in Iran are internationally well known and on-going occurrences, this is why it is important to maintain an on-going pressure on the Islamic regime to stop these inhumane practices. Since the beginning of the Rouhani presidency, the conditions of the political prisoners have not improved but have deteriorated.
My aim in writing this letter is to appeal to you to support these prisoners. I would like to emphasise that it is vital and essential that you put pressure on the regime in Iran to provide immediate and unconditional medication and medical attention to these political prisoners. I also request you to pressure the government in Iran to comply with the Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners as outlined by the United Nations.
An updated list of some of the political prisoners and background information is attached for your attention. This list is just a small example of thousands of prisoners who are deprived of medical attention.
