RE: 20 June 2015, the International Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran
I am writing to appeal for your support on the International Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran on 20th June 2015. I would like to appeal for your support for the men and women, boys and girls, students and intellectuals in Iran who are currently sitting in their cells awaiting their daily dose of torture and for some, death sentences, to be carried out.
Hundreds of workers and labour activists are harassed, imprisoned and tortured; their “crimes” range from possessing a book, posting their views on Facebook, and gathering to demand unpaid wages. They are attacked for demanding their right to strike, to assemble and to form independent trade unions and other workers’ organisations.
Behnam Ebrahimzadeh is one of the labour’s rights activists. He was arrested in June 2010 in Tehran-Iran and was already serving 4th years of his 5 years sentenced when he was tried again in December 2014. His lawyer was not allowed to attend the trial. Behnam was sentenced to another 9 and half years in prison. He has continuously been under physical and psychological torture while Behnam’s only child is undergoing treatment for Leukaemia. Behnam suffers from various ailments such as kidney pain, bleeding gums, neck and back injuries due to extended periods of torture followed by no medical intervention. There are many other jailed labour activists like Behnam.
Who we are ?
In 2006, a group of ex-political prisoners from Iran set up Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI), a non-government, non-profit organization, to become the voice of political prisoners and their families in Iran. We believe that everyone should have the right to choose the way they want to live their lives without fear of punishment; regardless of their gender, religion, belief, political views or sexual orientation. We believe that solidarity crosses all borders and history has taught us that when united, the impossible can become an achievement.
Just like unions, we understand the importance of lobbying local governments and international bodies and raise awareness and engaging the public. This is one of our most important tasks at CFPPI.
In the last four years, on 20 June, we organised a global day of action for political prisoners in Iran. In 2011, organisations, unions and individuals and families of political prisoners in 50 cities across the world all stood up as one, demanding an end to the brutality imposed on the people in Iran. A similar event will take place again this year.
On 20 June 2015 we would like to invite you to support the political prisoners in Iran in any way possible. Some of the suggested ways to support include:
- Issue a statement/message of solidarity on behalf of your union in support of jailed labour activists and all other political prisoners in Iran and demand their release
- Hold/attend demonstration in front of the Iranian embassy or city centres in your counties.
- Petition signing Please share the petition on your website and social media sites
We know that your union shares our views and would we relish the opportunity to meet with you or attend one of your events to discuss the work of CFPPI further and collaboration possibilities. If you require any further information about CFPPI, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We look forward hearing from you.
